declaration of interdependence

To create positive change, it is necessary for individuals and organizations to work together. As goals become increasingly complex, the need for cooperation becomes increasingly apparent. Every living thing on our planet is affected by the health of the environment, thus we understand why environmental issues encompass such a broad spectrum. While each and every cause is unique and important, we recognize that ultimately we are all working toward the same goal. To be as effective of possible in accomplishing our goals, we must develop a structure that fosters communication and cooperation between these related efforts. At UC Berkeley, that structure is ECo- the Environmental Coalition.

We hold these ideas to be self-evident, that communication is key to maintaining a healthy relationship of any kind. Respect to the autonomy of organizations and the individuals they are comprised of must be maintained. Equal respect and attention must be paid to the relationships between these individuals and organizations. Proper communication can overcome any obstacle and create ever greater possibilities.

There is strength in numbers. Having a framework to organize the diverse environmental interests on campus will help us to galvanize the sustainability movement at UC Berkeley by recruiting people to get involved where their passions lie, acting more effectively both individually and as a whole, and basically- creating and facilitating the change we collectively want to see in the world.
